And Jesus said, “Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me… She hath done what she could.”
These words have been powerfully liberating and I decided that they should hang on my wall above my desk. When your good enough isn’t good enough for anybody, this is a reminder of what Jesus thinks about our best efforts.
This was painted in acrylic with gold highlights and inspired from artwork that I observed in the marketplace in Guatemala.

Psalm 37

This is the Psalm to which I have turned time after time. After discovering this inspiration the first time it hung laminated on the kitchen wall, in the shower and on my bedroom mirror. After many years and occasions to find my rest in the Lord, I painted it with acrylic paint and gold highlights. The illumination style was inspired by Hungarian scribes of the Middle Ages. Too bad the gold doesn’t show up in this scan.

This painting is more than 26 years old. I painted in watercolors just after I graduated from Penn State Universtiy in 1981. Most of my projects were originals for other people. This one I did for myself. So it is still around, hanging in the foyer, reminding me daily of the pain lurking behind the plastic smiles.

The Poor In Spirit

Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:3) This is a small piece of calligraphy / illumination that has had big importance to me over the years. Megan requested this when she was preparing to leave for her first long stay away from home (SMBI and SIL). Since then she has propped it on many bedside tables and desks. Recently, I scanned it for reproduction. The original is sitting safely at home and the more durable copy is with her in Asia. Maybe someday the reproduction will be available for sale on wordesigner.com.

Today when I consider that we needed to send the more durable copy because of the hardships of life there , I tremble – praying that God will fill the poverty of her spirit with the abundance of His Kingdom.
